October 12, 2011 – Malibu, CA - The Malibu City Council unanimously passed a landmark resolution on Monday, October 10, taking a proactive step by supporting “national and worldwide efforts to reduce anthropogenic sources of mercury,” which is in many products in common use today - including the dental amalgam filling. Mayor John Sibert sponsored the Resolution, which was in response to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) suggestion that cities take an official position in the phase out or global ban of mercury. Malibu is the third city in the United States to do so.
During the City Council Meeting, Mayor Sibert revealed that while doing environmental studies of the ground in Malibu, mercury was found with no apparent source – except that the location in question previously hosted a dental office. Mayor Sibert said that he sponsored the Resolution because it is important to send a signal to the legislating bodies, including the United Nations, that cities and their residents are concerned with the toxic effects of mercury in the environment and in our bodies.
“This Resolution has a global impact. Dr. Joseph Sciabbarasi, a Los Angeles holistic doctor, who also attended the Malibu City Council Meeting to show his support for the Malibu Resolution, will also speak at the free seminar regarding mercury toxicity and effective detoxification methods. “Mercury is not a safe filling. Science does not support its safety. It is readily available to poison each of us. That is why I had my mercury fillings replaced years ago,” said Dr. Sciabbarrasi.
“Dental amalgam waste is a significant contributor of mercury discharges to municipal wastewater treatment facilities,” according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In a recent survey of seven major wastewater treatment plants in California, Minnesota, Ohio, and Maine, dentists were identified as the greatest contributor of mercury.
In efforts to decrease the amount of mercury coming from dental offices, the EPA is considering requiring the use of amalgam separators nationwide. The price range for amalgam separators is $200 - $1200. “There is no financial hardship for a dentist to use an amalgam separator, “ says Dori Rota, a Malibu resident and editor of TALKInternational.com, a popular resource on the internet regarding mercury toxicity.
